Why Ohana Kava Loves Tea

Hi there! My name is Matt, Founder and Owner of Ohana Kava Bar. I have been a tea lover since I was a teenager. I have been fascinated with teas for many years. Now, most people only think of camellia sinensis when they think of tea. In the south most probably think of sweet tea made using black tea by Lipton. Camellia Sinensis is one plant that is grown throughout India, China and other locations around the world. This is what is commonly referred to as tea. It’s usually described as white, green, yellow, black, oolong and pu-erh. These describe when they were picked (white being the earliest) and different levels of oxidation with green and black or fermentation and oxidation with pu-erh. Depending on which style of tea will also depend on what temperature of water to use and how long to steep it for. Pu-erh is also interesting because it can be stored for years and decades and increases in value and has been used as a form of money in some cultures.

My biggest passion though has always been herbal teas and remedies. Although, I am a Registered Nurse. I’ve always been a hippie, maybe a little bit of a witch doctor at heart. Personally, I think you should use what’s appropriate for the situation. If I have a common cold aka a virus I don’t need antibiotics. Some chicken soup and herbal teas that boost your immune system is best. However, if i have pneumonia or sepsis I am heading to

the hospital for antibiotics. Some immune boosting herbal teas are echinacea which grows wild here in Colorado. You can also use a combination of hibiscus, elderberries, olive leaf, rose hips, lemongrass, chamomile, and orange peel. There are also mushrooms that can be used to boost the immune system like chaga, reishi and maitake, these are all high in beta-glucans that may increase your body’s production of macrophages (the white blood cells that eat invaders).

At Ohana Kava Bar we sell a number of teas mostly green, white, black and rooibos. But kava is also an herbal root tea preparation. We also make some teas we put on tap. Like Purps Mcgurps which is an herbal blend of Indian Warrior, hibiscus , rose hips and sweetened with blueberry and grape juice. This may help boost your immune system, help you relax and may create vivid dreams and tastes delicious! Another drink on tap is Lemon Haze which is a mixture of lemongrass, lemon balm and hemp oil. These work great together to help you relax and may help with pain due to the high levels of citral.

Our tea menu consist of over 25 loose leaf teas that range from energizing and high in caffeine like yerba mate an herbal tea from South America, which is one of my favorites or the flavorful mango tango and bolder breakfast which is a blend of pu-erh and black teas. Some moderate

to low caffeine teas we carry are Meditative mind a very soft and subtle white tea with rosebuds and jasmine pearls. One of my favorites is Jasmine Pearls these are hand picked green tea leaves with fresh jasmine petals rolled into little balls that are fun to watch open as they steep. The taste is wonderful its light and floral. We also carry several herbal teas with no caffiene. One of my favorites is Blood Orange Smoothie made with Rooibos, Orange peel, hibiscus, rose petal, vanilla and citrus. There’s also Cold buster with Tulsi also known as holy basil, which has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. Some say it helps in attaining spiritual enlightenment. Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum) exhibits adaptogenic activity meaning it helps adapt to stress.
