What is Kava & Why Should You Drink It?
Kava bars across the U.S. are popping up left and right. Just as other health drinks like kombucha and juice cleanses have gained in popularity over recent years, kava is no exception. If you have yet to realize the benefits kava can bring into your everyday life, you may be wondering what kava is and why you should be drinking it.
What is kava?
Kava, or kava-kava, is a tropical root-based substance native to the South Pacific region. Used for centuries by native islanders for medicinal treatments and religious ceremonies, kava supplies a wide range of benefits. The substance is extracted from the root and transformed into a social drink popular to native islanders, similar to alcohol in Western societies. Based on research, kava is said to reduce anxiety, stress, pain, restlessness, and sleeping issues.
How does it work?
Kava root is extracted, made into a paste, mixed with water, and then strained to be consumed as a beverage. Often it is mixed with other delicious fruits like coconut or pineapple to lessen bitterness. Once ingested, active ingredients called kavalactones release their effects on the body.
