The best part? It’s simple to make, and with access to top-quality kava powders, you can easily prepare batches to keep in your refrigerator, ready to enjoy whenever you need a moment of calm. This guide will walk you through the steps to make kava at home, so you can experience the full benefits of this ancient beverage, creating a drink that’s perfect for sipping solo or sharing with friends. Let’s get started!

The Things You Need

  1. Some premium kava root powder from Ohana Kava Bar – Order Here
  2. A strainer, like our strainer bags we sell – Order Here
  3. Warm water – we are talking about around 100-120°F. Do NOT use HOT water. It will damage the kavalactones.  Think of the temperature of a hot tub if you do not have a liquid thermometer.
  4. A large bowl – this is where the action happens and is used to contain your liquid during preparating
  5. Optional: Ice to chill your kava for enjoyment
  6.  Optional: an airtight storage container for keeping in the refrigerator

Instructions to Make Kava

  1. Take 6 grams of kava root powder (little less than half a cup in most cases) and put it into your strainer inside of the bowl. Any powder that falls through the strainer can go directly into your kava tea
  2.  Pour your warm water into the strainer. You should use about 4oz or 1/2 cup per 6 grams of kava root powder, depending on how strong you like your kava tea.
  3. Knead your strainer bag to saturate your kava root powder and press it to get all the good stuff into the liquid.
  4. Once you are satisfied with the thorough kneading, twist your bag tight to release all the water from the bag
  5.  Now your kava is ready to be enjoyed! Shake with ice to quickly chill, pouring out the liquid without the ice into another container for a cool kava tea.
  6. If you wish to store the kava tea, pour it into an airright container like a mason jar to keep in the fridge for up to 48 hours. Be sure to shake or stir well before enjoying!
